The book is filled with wonderful creative suggestions for life's little detours, meticulously numbered from one to fifty. The audiobook CDs can be put in the car in any sequence on a long drive for fruitful listening. Life makes creative jumps according to the author and does not creeps like a scientist's linear fancy. It is all about remembering the great lessons taught from centuries and still needs to be understood with new vigor and insight.
Einstein said the most important personal question every individual will always ask is about the Universe friendliness or hostility. According to Regina he is either too smart or may be nuts. The point is to be happy is to have a certain kind of outlook on life and not necessarily be with higher income, fame or with a pet. So like Einstein we all need better outlook every time we step into the world.
The following lessons in the book are worth remembering.
• If one asks "what will make me happy individually" as we are advised by experts and monks to meditate regularly, spend time with friends, seize the moment when we have to, work in the garden, cook a great meal for the kids, feel as if the best is yet to come, make a gratitude list, make peace with the past so that it doesn't scrub the present, do conscious breathing for inner calmness.
• Life is all about what we think all day as is said what exist at the thought level will eventually exist in flesh and blood.
• At times we are helpless and feel lost in the darkness of our small little universes, perhaps think too much about past bitterness. When our emotions don't match the present we must ask whether it is about our bitter past or just spur of the moment.
• Prepare hard and go with the flow, preparation builds our confidence when we are well prepared it is easier to go with a flow of things and activities that confronts us.
• At times be Eccentric if possible, at around 1980 in the United States wearing purple color was odd, but it meant the person is tired of behaving like a copycat. To follow the entire rule we miss all the fun sometime. Einstein hairstyle may not be an answer to our existential condition. A man who attended a class naked at Berkley is hardly relevant in my situation. Monks wearing strange boots will be too much in my city but I will be eccentric in my own little ways, I know it in my heart.
• One should always start saving 10% of the regular income for retirement. The power of compound interest is enormous wealthy are the people who paid themselves first, the 10% principle will always work in practice.
• One should become the CEO of all ones joys it can help us find the courage to say what one truly wants. The usual fear of "if I don't get it will be devastating so don't even ask for it", can be overcome if we gain a certain level of personal autonomy.
• Visualize happiness and shed the age old secret gloom by getting out and choosing happy activities. Ask what would a happy person do now? Choose an hour of beauty for you, getting a massage may not be part of the culture so reading some love sonnets can be a good idea. Taking a bubble bath will cost nothing, rearranging the furniture is even better.
• In the next five years future will the current problem matter. Does it matter if one graduated in a long time now? We agonize about small issues, in five years the biggest problem of today will mean nothing; things renew themselves in five years.
• The secret of good life is choosing life with all its glory. One must not be afraid of living all by himself, living in the woods for two years can enhancing choices and will keep the body alive to nourish our souls in solitude.
• Forgive everyone: It is easier to forgive someone who has hurt us but difficult to forgive those who have hurt our dear ones, grant a general amnesty to all for oneself and a new happy life. It will prove a wise decision.
No matter how we feel, dressing up and preparing ourselves for a great day is always a good idea, the universe is trying to tell us "life is a gift, it is wise to have it" either everything or nothing will become a miracle.
