"Good living for me means having the time to actually think and make my ideas coherent, instead of feeling forced to react on impulse--quickly and not very intelligently--to everything in my life". It's Joe speaking, a college student of the bestselling author of Little Big Minds, Marietta McCarthy, professor of philosophy and longtime organizer of philosophical clubs. Joe's words are the best introduction for a book which is to be used.
A practical guide to make room for thinking in everyday life. As "ideas are the building blocks of our lives", so will "clear thinking, quiet introspection, and, of course, good conversation" help us slow down and "find our way to what really matters". "Philosophy", the author points out, "the art of clear thinking, is not, at least at first, a call to action. It is a wake-up call to think. Philosophy announces that it is spring-cleaning time for our mental and emotional houses". In this spirit, the book provides a set of ten mainstreaming ideas and related "cleaning tools". Literally, as at the end of each chapter, the reader will find how to proceed with good "houseworks". Fun activities, that can be done as part of a group or in solitude, as well as reading or listening recommendations, are offered. Philosophers, belonging to the "official" historical tradition, and thinkers, in a wider sense, overlapping other matters, from Zen to political and social commitment, lead the explorations of the main topics. So that while reading we will be healing: Epicurus and Charlotte Joko Beck on Simplicity, Karl Jaspers and Gloria Anzaldúa on Communication, Bertrand Russell and Mary Wollstonecraft on Perspective, Plato and Alan Watts on Flexibility, the Dalai Lama and Martin Luther King Jr. on Empathy, Jean-Paul Sartre and Elizabeth Spelman on Individuality, Albert Camus and Rita Manning on Belonging, Epictetus and Lao Tzu on Serenity, John Stuart Mill and Simone de Beauvoir on Possibility, Shunryu Suzuki and Jane Addams on Joy.
The "house rules" are simple and clear. The more diverse the group is, the more one learns, so feel free to gather: colleagues, relatives, neighbors etc. Meet at a minimum once in a month. Choose an inviting setting: outdoor if possible, otherwise stay in soft or natural light. Rotate the meeting place among group members. Sit in circle, make sure the eye contact is easy. Give the first five or even ten minute to settle in stillness. As dialogue is the essence of philosophizing, and a couple of "do nots" are essential to good dialogue: never talk when someone else is speaking, or make fun of what someone says. Provide time for sharing food. Welcome both laughter, and tears. In case, be comfortable, roll, and breathe. A rotating moderator for each meeting is recommended: this person, whose charge is to move the dialogue along and bring derailed conversations back on track, is to be honored. Watch the tone of voice. Relax. Do not dominate the dialogue, and resist the temptation to prove your point. Plan the next meeting and "keep tuned" on the distance.
