Things You Didnt See
By Ruth Dugdall
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jul 10th 2018.
Things You Didnt See by Ruth DugdallThere are two narrators of this story, Cass and Holly. There's a big cast of characters, but they are both central. The book takes place in Suffolk, England, in a small town. Cass's mother is found shot, and the emergency services take her to hospital. The police follow the cue of Cass's father who said it was a suicide attempt, but it turns out that there are plenty of people with a motive to kill her mother, because she was planning to sell her farm, while others had plans to make other uses of the property. It turns out Cass is emotionally troubled and has been hospitalized for possibly sel

Don't Wake Up
By Liz Lawler
Review by on Tue, Jul 3rd 2018.
Dr. Alex Taylor works in a hospital in Bath, in southwest Britain. This mystery novel starts off with her in a hospital bed, waking up to find herself restrained. The doctor with her makes a threat to do a horrific procedure on her, unless she says what the doctor wants her to say. Then she wakes up again, again in a hospital bed, but this time with familiar people around her. She tells them what happened to her but they don't really believe her. Alex has had a difficult time in the last year or so, and her emotional stability was already under threat with the demands of her high pressure job.

The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid by Colin MeloyHaving wrapped up his Wildwood trilogy, Colin Meloy gives us a new book aimed mainly at young readers, which is clearly also going to be the first in a series. The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid is a very pleasing tale of 12-year-old Charlie living in 1960s Marseilles, France, with his diplomat father. His mother has left the family, and Charlie is lonely. He does not go to school but instead has his own private tutor. He lives in a big house with staff to care for all his needs. Sinless

Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jun 19th 2018.
Grace Luther is 17. It is a couple of decades into the future, and the world has changed dramatically. There is no bad behavior, and there is almost no need for a police force. Everyone worships the one god, Great Spirit. If anyone does do anything wrong, then it is Great Spirit who carries out the punishment. The penalty is bodily disfigurement, or if the crime is very bad, it is death from swelling of the throat. These penalties occur swiftly after the sin. Early on in the book, Grace sees her friend Jude die from such a penalty when he gets into a car accident. His death is a harsh punishme

The Perfect Girl
A Novel
By Gilly Macmillan
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, May 15th 2018.
The Perfect Girl by Gilly MacmillanThis teen drama is somewhere between a young adult novel and a psychological thriller. Set in the UK, specifically the Bristol area, Zoe is 17. She lives with her mother, step father, step brother Marcus, and baby half-sister. It's a respectable household, and they have solidly middle class goals. And as with most such families, they have dark secrets. But these secrets are especially troubling: a few years ago Zoe was driving a car when she got into an accident that killed three of her friends. Much of the story is the gradual uncovering of what led to the accident. But there's much more. Par

I Am I Am I Am
Seventeen Brushes with Death
By Maggie O'Farrell
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Apr 10th 2018.
I Am I Am I Am by Maggie O'FarrellO'Farrell has established herself as an impressive novelist, with 7 novels since her debut After You'd Gone in 2000. I Am I Am I Am is an unconventional memoir, recounting 17 times that she or her daughter came close to dying. Few of us have ever come so close to death as O'Farrell, and of course one wonders whether it can be just bad luck, whether she makes bad choices, or whether she is in some way cursed. It turns out that several of these encounters with death are related to impairments she acquired in what was probably her first near-death experience, as a child with a form of encephaliti

Flat Lake in Winter
By Joseph T. Klempner
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Apr 10th 2018.
Originally published in 1999, Flat Lake in Winter has recently been released as an unabridged audiobook performed by George Newbern. Klempner's novel is a well-crafted mystery with strong psychological themes set in the small towns of the Adirondacks in NY State.  It is written in the style of a true crime non-fiction account, adding lots of detail about the characters, as if collected from interviews and evidence collecting.  There are only a few moments where we enter into the minds of the characters and get details about private lives that make it clear from the internal narrative
