By Louise Gornall
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Oct 17th 2017.
Under Rose-Tainted Skies by Louise GornallLouise Gornall tells the story of 17-year-old Nora, who has a major mental illness. She has not been able to leave her house for 4 years, due to a sudden onset of agoraphobia when she was 13. She also has crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder which makes her perform rituals, need activities to be done in even numbers, require symmetry in appearance, and avoid contact with other humans in case of contamination by germs. Surprisingly, it seems that she does not have hand-washing rituals. Nora's anxiety is so severe that she sometimes loses consciousness at moments when it is especially acute.

The Shark
By Mary Burton
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Oct 10th 2017.
This grizzly detective mystery about a psychopath murderer on a power trip who likes gambling for the lives of underage prostitutes is bizarrely classified as a romance book. There is indeed a romance, between Riley Tatum, a Virginia state trooper and Clay Bowman, who works for a local security agency. They had hot passionate sex 5 years previously, but then Clay, who had recently lost his wife, didn't pursue the relationship, and Riley was crushed. Now they are working together again on cases of girls who turn up dead not long after disappearing, and the seething passion between them cannot b

ADHD Nation
Children, Doctors, Big Pharma, and the Making of an American Epidemic
By Alan Schwartz
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Sep 5th 2017.
ADHD Nation by Alan SchwartzAlan Schwartz is a journalist who gained a reputation for covering the problem of concussion in football, with high rates of brain injury and dementia among former NFL players. In his latest book he addresses the growth of the diagnosis of ADHD and the use of medication in children and adults. His position is clear and plausible: while ADHD is real, it is massively overdiagnosed in the USA and too many people are taking medication for it. Schwartz does an excellent job covering the history of psychiatric thought about attention deficit and hyperactivity, collecting details that few have covere

Annie Taylor has a psychotherapist father and an Indian stay-at-home mother. She has a sister a few years younger than her. They live in a small town by the Hudson in upstate New York. She is 19 years old as she narrates her story, which starts with her mother's disappearance ten years before. She just vanished one day, and the police searches turned up nothing. Although Annie is vague about the details, it soon becomes clear that her father has been arrested for his wife's murder, and she is convinced that he could never have done it. Her father, Simon Taylor, is the author of a series of be

The Fortunate Ones by Ellen UmanskyIn this novel that alternates between the Second World War and the present, Ellen Umansky explores the relationship between Rose and Lizzie, who meet after Lizzie's father dies in California. The painting is what ties the two sides of the novel together, with two women leading very separate lives until they meet and make friends. Rose is older, having grown up in Vienna in the 1930s with her parents and brother. Lizzie lives in Manhattan but she grew up in Los Angeles an
