By David Levithan and Nina LaCour
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Feb 13th 2018.
You Know Me Well by David Levithan and Nina LaCourSan Francisco. Mark and Kate are high school seniors set to graduate. There is just a week to go. While they are in the same class, they didn't know each other. But they are thrown together during a night of partying in the city. But their romances are with others: Mark has been in love with his best friend Ryan for years, while Kate has been set up with Violet but is nervous about following through. Neither romance is going smoothly, and Mark and Kate help each other out, suddenly becoming close friends, while becoming more distant from their long-term friends. There's lots of emotional drama

New York 2140
By Kim Stanley Robinson
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 30th 2018.
Robinson's novel set a century or so in the future shows a New York City not very different from the existing one, except that lower Manhattan is underwater and people get around by water taxi or by sky-bridges between the superscrapers. Sealevel has risen 50 feet. But people still want to live in the city and property is at a premium. Most of the narrators live in the same large apartment block which houses over 2000 residents. The characters include two young boys who love searching for treasure. There are two "quants" who work in finance: at the start of the book they have been kidnapped an

By Annie Barrows
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 16th 2018.
Nothing by Annie BarrowsCharlotte and Frankie are 15 and they read a lot of YA literature. They are very familiar with all the clichés of the genre, and often point out the difference between their lives and what would happen in a YA novel. Because in their lives, nothing happens. This gives Charlotte the idea of writing an account of their lives, which she will call Nothing. So this YA novel  by Annie Barrows is an attempt to buck the trend of YA lit and capture the ordinary details of everyday life. Indeed, not much happens. There's a story about a coffee pot that got broken, and there's a road trip. Th

The End of Our Story
By Meg Haston
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 16th 2018.
The End of Our Story is a YA romance featuring serious themes. Bridge is a high school senior who takes her life seriously. She narrates most of the story. She lives with her mother and little sister -- her father has never been in the picture, and she has a good relationship with her mother most of the time, although they don't always see each other much. She has known Will since she was little, and they were best friends until they became romantically involved. She spends a lot of time with him and his family -- his father is almost like a father to her. Then in junior year she gets drunk at

Lie to Me
By J.T. Ellison
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 9th 2018.
Lie to Me by J.T. EllisonSutton is married to Ethan. They are both writers, and love stories. They tell different stories of their relationship, in alternate sections. The story starts with Sutton disappearing, and Ethan at first believing she has left him, and then worrying something terrible has happened. We hear stories about how they met, their families, their friends, and their pasts, but not all the details agree, and we are left wondering what is true. But the main suspense is not in the story itself, but in the game the author J.T. Ellison plays with the readers. We wonder whether it will really be a completel

Made for Love
A Novel
By Alisa Nutting
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Dec 26th 2017.
Made for Love starts well, with 35 year old woman Hazel returning to her father's place after leaving her husband, only to find that he has committed to living with a sex doll. It is a bizarre and uncomfortable scene, but very funny. Her father is so unabashed that she just has to accept the situation, especially since she has nowhere else to go. The story gets more conceptual as we find out more about Hazel's husband Brian, who founded and runs a massive tech corporation. Hazel has left him because she is scared of him: he wants her to have a chip implanted in her brain. As the story proceeds

Odd Child Out
By Gilly Macmillan
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Dec 12th 2017.
Odd Child Out by Gilly MacmillanGilly Macmillan's Odd Child Out combines a detective story with two very earnest themes: dying children and racism towards immigrants. Detective Jim Clemo works in Bristol, a city in Southwest UK. He is given the case of a 15 year old boy, Noah, who is near death because he fell in a canal, and he already had a very serious illness. He was with his best friend Adbi, who is a Somali refugee, whose family moved to Bristol before he was born. The police want to know what happened but Abdi won't say. He refuses to speak. Through telling the story from the perspectives of most of the main character

We Are Okay
By Nina LaCour
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Nov 14th 2017.
Slow placed and meditative, We Are Okay has Marin telling her story of grief and disappointment. She is in her first year of college, and, implausibly, she is staying alone in the dorms over the winter break. She is clearly depressed and soaking in misery. She is planning to spend the time mostly alone, in the deep winter cold. She is preparing to read books and to listen to podcasts. But her friend Mabel is visiting and she also prepares for that. Marin isn't sure she can really cope with the visit but they used to be best friends and they used to have a relationship. Marin has lost her grand
