By Pete Wallis and Joseph Wilkins
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jul 17th 2018.
What are you staring at? by Pete Wallis and Joseph WilkinsThis short illustrated book in the form of a graphic novel is aimed at children  to explain restorative justice. Two boys at school, Jake and Ryan, get into a fight, and the story explains how this is a result of the emotional difficulties Jake has after his uncle dies. It also shows how the fight leads to them being angry with each other and being unable to listen to each other. A counselor gets them to talk and this brings the wall between them down a bit, but it takes some effort at reconciliation to really make it possible for them to understand each other. Eventually they work it out

Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jun 19th 2018.
Sinless by Sarah TarkoffGrace Luther is 17. It is a couple of decades into the future, and the world has changed dramatically. There is no bad behavior, and there is almost no need for a police force. Everyone worships the one god, Great Spirit. If anyone does do anything wrong, then it is Great Spirit who carries out the punishment. The penalty is bodily disfigurement, or if the crime is very bad, it is death from swelling of the throat. These penalties occur swiftly after the sin. Early on in the book, Grace sees her friend Jude die from such a penalty when he gets into a car accident. His death is a harsh punishme

What Does Consent Really Mean?
By Pete Wallis and Thalia Walllis
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Mar 20th 2018.
This short graphic novel has teens talking with each other about consent to sex. They voice a number of different views but soon come to the idea that consent should be clear and enthusiastic. They acknowledge that talking about sex can be awkward and difficult, but they come to the conclusion that if the consent isn't clearly voiced, then it isn't really consent. The characters are diverse, including boys and girls, black, white Muslim, and different levels of sexual experience. They talk about the pressures on girls to go along with what their boyfriends want, but they also talk about the pr

Nothing
By Annie Barrows
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 16th 2018.
Charlotte and Frankie are 15 and they read a lot of YA literature. They are very familiar with all the clichés of the genre, and often point out the difference between their lives and what would happen in a YA novel. Because in their lives, nothing happens. This gives Charlotte the idea of writing an account of their lives, which she will call Nothing. So this YA novel  by Annie Barrows is an attempt to buck the trend of YA lit and capture the ordinary details of everyday life. Indeed, not much happens. There's a story about a coffee pot that got broken, and there's a road trip. Th
