Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Jan 24th 2017.
Rebuttal by Jyotsna HariharanJyotsna Hariharan's Reubuttal is an audio drama performed by 5 actors, Phoebe Strole, Michael Crouch, Nina Mehta, Peter Ganim, and Dan Bittner, with sound effects to make it more realistic. It's about two teens in their senior year who are fighting their parents' expectations of them.  Alex Dassan is a young Indian woman whose parents expect her to go into marine biology, but who wants to be a writer. Jeremy Beekman's parents expect him to go into medicine, but he wants to be an artist. They meet in a debate team, where they practice argumentative skills, and this gives them som

Children's Rights
From Philosophy to Public Policy
By Mhairi Cowden
Review by Hennie Weiss on Tue, Nov 15th 2016.
Children's Rights: From Philosophy to Public Policy by Mhairi Cowden is what the title suggests, a discussion in regards to children's rights from a philosophical perspective, which then lends itself to discussing public policies in place today. Cowden states that there is a lack of theory and thinking about children's rights as well as lack of explanation as to why children have rights in the first place. Starting the discussion then is a dialogue about what constitutes a child and what constitutes rights. Is a child a child based on age, based on cognitive abilities, sociocultural standards

Every Exquisite Thing
By Matthew Quick
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Sep 20th 2016.
This YA novel is about the power of stories for some teens and coping with horrible events. Nanette O'Hare is a smart student who does not have any real friends at first. She briefly befriends a teacher who recommends she reads an old classic of teen angst, The Bubblegum Reaper. They bond over this book, but then she tries to kiss the teacher, and he stops talking to her. But Nanette also comes to know the author of her favorite novel, a man called Nigel Wrigley Booker, and he provides her with some understanding of the world in a friendly way.  Booker introduces Nanette to a talented but

Silence is Goldfish
By Annabel Pitcher
Review by Christian Perring on Tue, Aug 16th 2016.
Silence is Goldfish by Annabel PitcherThis is the third young adult novel by British author Annabel Pitcher, and it may not translate so well to American readers, both because of some of the details rooted in life in the UK, and more because of the sense of humor of its narrator, Tess Turner. It's a story of identity, friendship and coming of age. She is 15 when she finds writing by her father describing his negative feelings about her birth -- she was born through IVF using another man's sperm. She is devastated by the discovery and expresses her anger by refusing to talk. It's not clear how much her reaction is under her control

The Memory of Light
By Francisco X. Stork
Review by Brett Karlan on Tue, May 24th 2016.
The Memory of Light by Francisco X. Stork Young adult fiction is often at its best when it offers us a window into the psychological perspective of a particular character. Novels in this genre are often exclusively first-personal, and they aim to offer us a fascinating way of reaching inside the developing mental life of the teenage protagonist. They help us figure out what makes these characters tick and how they learn to inhabit the worlds (whether fantastical or mundane) that they find themselves in. The Memory of Light, a new young adult novel by Francisco Stork, adds a fascinating twist to this genre convention: the&

A Monster Calls
Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd
By Patrick Ness
Review by Catia Cunha on Tue, May 17th 2016.
Conor and his mother live in a cozy house before a church with a graveyard and a yew tree. He's been having the same nightmare repeatedly: powerless, hands slipping from his grasp, a heaviness. When he wakes in the middle of the night to a strange voice calling his name, it is not the monster of his nightmare, but another walking in the form of the yew tree. The monster says Conor called him, but he has no recollection of doing any such thing. Conor will listen to three stories from the monster and then he will have to tell a story of his own. His truth. The one thing Conor is the most terrifi
